Macmillan Seminars

Macmillan invites you to join us as we discuss the one issue we all have in common as educators - the teaching of language, and how we can do it better.
The Macmillan Webinars are a series of live video talks from some of the biggest names in ELT. You can watch these directly in your web browser, and all webinars are free to view. Have a question? You'll be able to put questions directly to the presenter during the session.
Registration for the webinars will start from Monday 23rd March.

"New technology - new pedagogies"
Advances in new technology have changed forever both the teaching and learning of languages. Nevertheless, the use of technology in ELT remains a hugely controversial area and disagreement exists at every level. This webinar will critically analyse some of the key new technologies, such as interactive whiteboards, podcasts and wikis. It will then provide an overview of some of the emerging ‘new pedagogies’ and describe how they affect a number of key areas: grammar, lexis , the four language skills, phonology and learner training.

"The power of lists"
From grocery lists to to-do lists, top ten lists to worst ever lists, lists are everywhere. What is it about lists that draws our attention? In this webinar I will look at the power of lists. We will explore some popular lists in the language teaching profession and I will share with you six ideas on using lists with your students.

"Seven things beginning with M"
It’s a truism that no single method is going to meet the needs of all teachers and all learners, either locally or globally. Hence, we now operate in what is called the post-method era. Yet methods formerly provided teachers with a certain sense of security, a role which perhaps coursebooks now fulfil. This security is illusory, though, if it is not grounded in some basic principles of learning and education, principles that I will attempt to identify, and which (I will argue) constitute a blueprint for a coherent approach to language teaching.

"A dictionary at your fingertips"
A learners' dictionary gives more information about how English is currently used than any other reference book, but many students do not realise this. They often think that dictionaries give them meaning and spelling: true, but there is so much more. We need to know their collocations, structures, register, field, synonyms, figurative uses, and so on.
By using all the information given, students' use of English will improve, and they will become more confident. In this webinar I will explain some of the features found in dictionaries, and will suggest activities that teachers can do to make students aware of the features, and to help to sensitise them to the language.
